About Us

How it began...

Almost 50 years ago Wade bought his first Quarter Horse mare.  She came from Hamilton, MT in the back of a chicken hauling bus.  Later he bought a beautiful bay son of Prince Bar by three Bars TB.  He ran them on the chariot and also rode them.  Later, more horses came along including a little bay mare named Bay Ida Mae by Cowboy II by Joe Moore out of Baldys Ida by Baldy Joe by Joe Hancock.  she was little, 15 hands, and could really run.  She went on to produce a track record holder by Lad Leo and seven other AAA/AA colts including one by the great Azure Te.

In 1971 Wade bought Lad Leo, the last own son of the great Leo.  Lad, became the cornerstone of the Zollinger breeding program.  Like his father, Lad Leo stamped his offspring with correct conformation, good bone, large feet, excellent muscling, intelligence, and, of course, a willing disposition.  Lad put Wade in business, and his son JX Leo Sun Up and the Lad Leo daughters and granddaughters keep him in business.

After many years working in the Quarter Horse Industry, Wade has accomplished some of the highest honors there are in the Horse World.  The ranch has been featured in the Quarter Horse Journal, The American Quarter Horse, and several other books and magazines across the world.  The Western Horseman in Germany did a five page article about the ranch and its accomplishments.  In 2010, Western Horseman named Zollinger Ranch as one of the Premier Breeders of Performance Horses in the nation.

On November 22, 2013, we lost Wade to a farming accident. Although, there is a hole which will never completely be full again, we will continue to breed and raise performance horses. We are proud of our program and what we've accomplished. We look forward to seeing you all this fall!!
